About Fort McMurray
Once a traditional trapper post with no all-season road access until the 1960s; Fort McMurray has emerged as one of Canada’s fastest growing communities and economies. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was a dominantly Cree First Nations area.

Oil has been extracted from the local area since the 1930s, and from that point on Fort McMurray has played a vital role in the Canadian petroleum industry. Today, nearly 80,000 people make Fort McMurray there home, with a sizable community of settlers from Newfoundland & Labrador. The climate of Fort McMurray consists of cold winters with occasional extreme weather conditions, to warm summers with plenty of hours of daylight.
